What is a psychologist?
Psychologists are experts in human behaviour and mental health. Psychologists are interested in how thoughts, experiences and biology guide behaviour.

Psychologists support people with various difficulties from "everyday" issues such as stress and relationships, through to more severe psychological difficulties such as depression and anxiety.

All psychologists are trained in evidence-based treatments. Psychologists work in a variety of areas such as clinical, sport, neuropsychology, developmental, health and forensic.
What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychologist?
General psychologists complete six years of training, including 4-year Honours degree and 2 years training which may be either a 2-year internship or a 1-year post graduate qualification plus 1-year internship.

Clinical psychologists training is a minimum 8-years including 4-year Honours degree and a 2-3 year accredited post-graduate degree e.g. Masters in Psychology (Clinical). The focus is on assessment, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. Study is then followed by a 2 year registrar program overseen by the Psychology Board of Australia.
Clinical psychologists undertake accredited education and training to specialise in an endorsed area such as “clinical”.

A psychologist must meet the qualifications and other requirements set down by the Psychology Board of Australia.
These are outlined above.
The title “psychologist” is protected in Australia i.e. only those who have completed training and supervision are registered by the Psychology Board of Australia.

The title “counsellor” is not protected in Australia. This means that qualifications may vary. There is no mandated requirement to complete a qualification to become a counsellor. However, there are undergraduate and post graduate qualifications in counselling and organisations such as PACFA promote specific training and registration standards.

Psychologists training includes learning how to assess, diagnose and treat mental health issues. They have been trained to treat complex mental health issues. A psychologist is qualified to make a diagnosis.
